kiss me stupid, a poem

kiss me stupid, a poem | expressions

She looked as if
she’d cry
if I were to press
just the right buttons.

A pumpkin head with sharp teeth,
that bumps around at night
gobbling up small children
because they refuse
to brush their teeth,
to go to bed on time,
and to be seen
without being heard.

She looked as if
she was trying to be sexy,
but all I saw
was fear.

A ship frozen in ice;
it waits
for the seasons to change.

She looked as if
she was waiting for me
to kiss her on the lips,
stupidly.

wedding cake, a poem

wedding cake, a poem | expressions

She looked as if
she did not wish me well.

She slowly draws her finger
across the wedding cake frosting;
and they watch her appalled
as she puts her finger in her mouth
and slowly sucks off the spread.

She looked as if
she was watching me
in pretend surreptitiousness.

A woman with many arms
strokes a harp of infinite strings;
each stroke is a tune
you’ll only hear but once;
it echoes back
to the beginning
and makes you shiver.

She looked as if
she only feigned her pensiveness
but what she really wanted
was to laugh aloud
at the absurdity.

rabbit, a poem

rabbit, a poem | expressions

She looked as if
she believed it was going to be all right,
even if the worst were to happen.

The magician’s hat begins to attract things,
light things at first, napkins and loose brooches;
but soon hats and canes, then chairs and tables;
and finally people start to be sucked into it
until there is no one left in the room at all
not even the magician.

She looked as if
she hid deep inside
and only pretended
not to be ashamed
of all that she was
and all that she wasn’t.

A rabbit with long ears
that flop in front of its eyes;
innocence hardwired
into chains of deoxyribonucleic acid
that spiral and twist back to a time
where none of us know any better.

She looked as if
she loved you
the way you were.

rapunzel, a poem

rapunzel, a poem | expressions

She looked as if
she’d eaten both
the mouse and the cheese.

Rapunzel braids her hair
humming in low tones;
she dreams of a prince
lost in time.

She looked as if
she’d just remembered
that her best friend
had lied to her the night before.

The shimmer of a glowing cat
as it appears and disappears
against the black of midnight;
its eyes, each the color of sapphire.

She looked as if
she knew just
what you were thinking.
