real

I want a word
more real than the last.

    where she went

    Your uniform world
    a measured lattice
    simple and elementary
    until it breaks up
    against primordial chaos
    that bursts through.

    Great swells and waves
    crash
    each and every block
    heaved up and dropped
    flat solid squares spreading apart
    on molten turmoil
    and yesterday’s certainty
as you wonder all the while
    where you are
    and where she went.

      hold back nothing

      Hold back nothing
      ambiguously
      each word
      falling from you
      a drop of mist
      in the middle of
      a downpour.

        tomorrow

        Tomorrow
        a new word will arrive
        packaged carefully
        with an exotic stamp
        pasted
        in the upper right-hand corner.

          small words

          Small words
on the edge of a sentence
          drifting in one direction first
          but then taking an unexpected
          twist
          and leading you down
          a tunnel
          where as of yet
          there is no light.

            slippery

            Holding still
            and watching words
            drift past me
            each one wrong
            and worse
            slippery.
