I knew a woman lovely in her chromosomes
Enzymes, catalysts, ribonucleic acid
worked together day and night
to induce visions of her ass
across my internal slate
always drawing me in
and down there
again and again
where I never asked to be.

people don’t have any judment, about love, nor self love…
what takes to be brave…?
what’s mean to be strong…? people look for love… but what they find…?
lies, fakeness… and a little of sacarsm of the hopeless life.
Love is in the active, not the passive. If we wait for it to come to us, it might never.
Matt, I saw you had a left a comment on my blog and I was stunned. Thank you for your kind words about my dog nail/duck turd poem. I love this series of “tangled affection” poems. Very thought provoking. Your “I knew a woman…” rings of Theodore Roethke, yes? I am terrible with RSS feeds and communicating this way. I also sort of hate Facebook. But I will continue to follow Shadow of Iris. It looks like you post at least one poem everyday. Way to go! Lisa
Thank you, Lisa!
Yes, I’m making a little play off one of Theodore Roethke’s poems; the first line at least. I’m so happy you noticed! Your blog is lovely!
Thanks Matt for your kind words about my blog. I too have done a tribute to Roethke’s poem, “I Knew a Woman,” and so I guess that is why that first line of your poem jumped out at me. I love that poem of his. But I switched it up to be “I Knew a Man.” I pretty much went line for line. It does not appear on the blog, I don’t put everything I write on there, only the things I send out to my “list” for Poem of the Week. “I Knew a Man” hit a little too close to home for me to share it with my list, but since you don’t even know me from Adam (or Eve), I would like to send it to you, if you would like to see it. Let me know the easiest way to get it to you. Lisa// p.s. I also have to tell you, I was impressed by your use of the word “ass” in the poem. It was not at all chauvanistic, Matt, but very human, loving, and well, conflicted. Huh. I can’t believe I’m saying this to a total stranger, but you are a poet, and you admire Roethke, so you are not so strange to me, after all.
Thank you again, Lisa. I really appreciate your comments!
