the sacrifice, a poem

A wond’rous sacrifice, why this methinks
Would something soothe my pain.

– John Gunning Seymer

the sacrifice, a poem

They sacrificed themselves relentlessly
each day, for time on end,
until eventually they forgot
just what it was they had sacrificed for;
and when they looked back
at all the lost time
their regret became piquant and palpable;
they began to rail against one another
in self-righteous recrimination
until a sense of a deep resentment set in among them
and all that was left was a simmering discord
tinged with a pungent whiff of animosity.

It was not until the first drop of blood was spilt
that they remembered what it had all been for,
the sacrifice.

The fakirs of the swart, abundant gods,
And magi, the consulters of the stars,
In contrite sackcloth, bearing serpent-rods,
Cleft the close air with words like scimitars:
“The gods demand a human sacrifice
No rain will fall until the victim dies.”

– Henry Abbey, The King’s Sacrifice, a poem

The God’s enrag’d, the Druid cries,
Woden demands a sacrifice;
Ere yet the hour-dividing sun
Has twice his daily progress run;
A worthy sacrifice prepare,
A Nymph of noble blood and fair;
The God’s enrag’d, The Druid cries,
Woden demands a sacrifice.

– John William Smith, The Druid’s Sacrifice, a poem
