transient visitor

transient visitor
An eschatological question
hovers briefly in the air
then echoes off the masonry,
falling down
into the noise and traffic and heat
of the cobblestone street,
hesitating for a moment
above the frown of an old man
then dropping away and slipping
under the slow turning wheel of a wain
just before it seeps
into a storm drain
and drifts away
in yesterday’s urine.
